When I had my first son I was hopeless at nursery rhymes – I would remember one or two lines of various nursery rhymes from my childhood and that was about it. I already drove my husband mad by trying to sing along to pop songs without knowing the words – this was going to get worse with all the various nursery rhymes I didn’t know the words to!
Now, after attending various singing groups, play groups, library bounce and rhyme sessions, and when all else fails – ‘googling’ the words, I’m a dab hand at nursery rhymes – my husband has even said that my singing has improved with all the practise I’ve had with the boys (mind you, it couldn’t get worse!).
Singing and nursery rhymes are so important to little ones development, and great fun too. I therefore thought I’d list all the nursery rhymes I know (which have actions, as they make it more fun/interactive). I’m not going to record myself singing them (I wouldn’t put you through that), so if you’re unsure of the tune, then I’d suggest going onto Youtube as you’ll be bound to find someone braver than I singing it on there! If you can’t find the lyrics to any of them then please contact me and I’ll post them on here.
1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive
2 Little Dicky Birds sitting on a wall
5 little monkeys jumping on a bed
1 finger, 1 thumb keep moving
5 little ducks went swimming one day
Bouncing up and down on my big red tractor
Dingly, dangly scarecrow
Head, shoulders, knees and toes
Here is the bee hive, but where are the bees?
Hickory Dickory Dock
Horsey Horsey don’t you stop
I had a little turtle
I hear thunder
If you’re happy and you know it
Miss Molly had a Dolly
Mr Sun, Sun, Mr Golden Sun
Open, close them
Pat a Cake
Ring a roses
Rock a bye baby
Round and round the garden
Row, row, row the boat
The Grand Old Duke of York
There’s a spider on the floor
This little piggy went to market
Twinkle twinkle little star
What shall we do with the grumpy pirate
Wheels on the bus
Zoom zoom zoom, I’m going to the Moon
